The Corvallis Sports Park Winter II Season champions were determined last Friday. Each season teams in the competitive and premier divisions play eight games. The top two teams from each league play an extra game on championship night to determine the overall season winner. The exciting evening featured championship matches for the Women's Competitive, Men's Premier, Men's Competitive and Coed Competitive leagues.
First up was the OSU Women's Club taking on the Reign-OC for the Women's Competitive league championship. The OSU Women's Club team went undefeated during the season with only one draw. The previous two matches against the Reign-OC were one sided affairs at 10-3 and 14-8. This match was missing the fire needed to really make it an interesting match, too much giggling and not enough yelling honestly. 12-7 was the final tally if you believe the referee was interested enough to keep the score accurately the entire time. Sorry ladies.
Things thankfully heated up in the Coed Competitive final between Rufulundeer and The Grundlebugs. Despite both teams having silly names they both came to play. The Grundlebugs featured OSU seniors Lauren Wipple, Tiara Hong, Kelli Washburn, Jen Crump and Melissa Onstad. The Grundlebugs came out on top 7-6 in the first meeting between the teams. This time Rufulundeer jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The Grundlebugs fought hard to close the score but couldn't stop the bleeding. Rufulundeer won the match 7-3 proving that life can go on after college.
The Men's Competitive final pitted Right About Meow against the Insane Clowns, a team that has been playing since the Corvallis Sports Park opened. I'm not going to waste any space talking abut their team names. Right About Meow defeated the Clowns 8-4 in their previous contest. Insane Clowns got their prescription levels corrected and avenged the loss to win the championship by a score of 9-5.
The main event of the evening came last, Who Killed Bruno versus Murphy. Who Killed Bruno had to be considered the favorite given their past successes in the league. The Murphy team made up of OSU Men's Club players were not impressed and fought for every inch. Murphy took a small lead early and that had to give them confidence. It seemed that Who Killed Bruno would turn in yet another come-from-behind win. Certainly the crowd thought it was just a matter of time before they took control of the game. Indeed, Bruno did tie the game at 3 a-piece with just a couple of minutes left. But Murphy shocked everyone by nailing the game shut with a goal in the final minute. The king was dead and the fat lady sang with the score 4-3.
