Two Corvallis based soccer teams recently won notable soccer tournaments in Oregon. The Corvallis Football Academy U16 boys team coached by Dave Ellis edged out eleven other Oregon youth club teams to win the 2007 President's Cup championship. The second team from Corvallis to win notoriety was Cometa, a men's soccer team that has been based in Corvallis for several years and participates in the Willamette Soccer League.
Throughout April, CFA United competed against Oregon youth teams to advance out of their group with a perfect 4-0-0 record. On Saturday April 28th, CFA United defeated Basin United of Klamath Falls 3-0 to advance to the finals match against Eastside United from Gresham. The very next day CFA United defeated ESU by a narrow score of 1-0 in Tualatin Hills to win the 2007 Presidents Cup championship.
The Corvallis Football Academy is a youth soccer club founded in 2005 to deliver a higher level of soccer training and experience for boys and girls in Corvallis. CFA is a member of Oregon Youth Soccer Association and participates in regional leagues and tournaments as well as local leagues such the Corvallis Sports Park league.
LaX, a Latino radio station in Eugene, KXOR-AM (660), sponsored the second annual Cinco de Mayo Soccer Tournament in Springfield to celebrate Mexico's Independence Day. Eighteen men's open soccer teams from all over Oregon competed in the weekend tournament for a share of $4000 in cash prizes. The event itself is huge with live radio coverage, food vendors, a carnival and a live stage performance by Los Angeles Azules a chart topper in Mexico. This tournament is serious business and teams come hunting for the $2000 first prize.
Cometa participated in last years event and managed to finish in fourth place. This year Cometa advanced as a second seed out of thier group and reached the championship match by defeating Boca Juniors, the defending Willamette League champions . In the final against Deportivo Colima, Cometa conceded the first goal and were on the verge of loosing the match when in the final minutes "Galin" Cisneros got on the end of a cross and equalized the game at one apiece. Cometa completed the comeback by winning in shootouts after just four shooters to claim the championship and the $2000 cash prize.
Corvallis is the present home for the Cometa team, but many of the players share ties to Sanata Teresa a town near Guadalajara in Mexico. Cometa uses the team as a way to regularly meet with family and friends each Sunday for Willamette League matches or in competitions like the Cinco de Mayo tournament. Cometa plays its home matches at Willamette Park in Corvallis at 2:00 PM on Sundays.
